5.0 star star star star starHe was very very careful. I could tell he was curious and wanted to get to the bottom of my issue. He also explained everything and answered all my questions. I couldn't believe how patient he was.

4.0 star star star star star_borderThis is hard to rate as there are very few neuroopthalmologists. He seems knowledgable and was able to give me some insight into my symptoms. I had difficulty getting across what I was trying to explain about my symptoms. I had to poke and prod for information a little more than usual, but the information he provided seems helpful to know, and may be helpful with my next optometry appointment, and for managing my symptoms long term.

5.0 star star star star starDr. Melen is such a smart, knowledgeable & very well thorough in doing all examinations needed to ensure that the patient’s symptoms are addressed. He has an excellent patient care & discusses the treatment plans.

3.0 star star star star_border star_borderFound him personable and received a thorough examination, however he had difficulty hearing me through my mask and was somewhat dismissive of my questions and concerns. Had requested a neuro-opthalmologist but was given an appointment with Dr Melem who is a neurologist dealing with eyes. My previous doctor handled all my vision needs including prescriptions and minor surgery, in addition to specialist medical visit. I was not expecting to have to find a second doctor to cover these.

0.0 star_border star_border star_border star_border star_borderDr. Melen was not good. He had a terrible bedside manner, did not ask me anything to understand why I was there, talked over me and interrupted when I did try and speak. He did not access my chart before hand and spent an hour with me to tell me he didn't know what was going on and that he could order an MRI. I had an MRI completed at Northwestern the week before which he would have known if he looked in my chart. And then wasted more of my time reviewing the results after he had just spent an hour not listening to me.

1.0 star star_border star_border star_border star_borderVery impersonal and said I should get punished for not taking my medication which i guess he’s passionate about me taking my meds but I was taken aback by his comment. He handled my eyes with no care, used a tissue that I saw him touch a door with and leave the room touching God knows what only to use that as a way to hold my eye lid. Then proceeds to give me 3 eye drops to dilate my eyes fast. Which he should have told the nurse who took my vitals to dilate my eyes! I stead of using 3 drops. I leave feeling horrible after seeing him. I wouldn’t recommend him to anyone I know.

2.0 star star star_border star_border star_borderI am a black man and I don't believe NWH approach Minority health problem with equality. I have been under NWH care for over 18+ and in every case I have been subjected to under prescribe treatment, not equal. This was a great disappointment because NWH is rated among the top in the nation. Very Sad🤕

5.0 star star star star starHe spent a lot of time going over my history and records I brought in, and Thoroughly discussed my way her case. Not once did I feel rushed. He wanted an additional test, had me take it, and immediately took me back in to discuss further.

3.0 star star star star_border star_borderThe doctor didn't really tell me anything new...or give me any new information. It was a big downer of an appointment. The "bedside" manner could have been a lot better I was holding back tears the entire appointment.

External Professional Relationships
Pharmaceutical, device, and biotechnology companies frequently collaborate with basic scientists and physicians within an academic medical center to help advance science and improve patient care. These relationships are important in achieving scientific breakthroughs and in establishing the effectiveness and safety of promising new therapies. In order to assure objectivity in clinical research and patient care, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (Feinberg), Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Children's Hospital of Chicago Medical Center, and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab have adopted integrity policies that require research and clinical faculty (in full-time, part-time, and unpaid/voluntary categories) to report compensated and uncompensated external industry relationships. Patients are encouraged to discuss these disclosures with their physician as well as to inquire as to how these relationships are overseen by Feinberg.
