Diane was very kind during our interaction and referred me to a specialists based on her own clinical judgment rather requiring me to advocate for myself.

She recommended I go to the ER and I literally had a blood clot in my shoulder that I would have just assumed was "normal" thoracic pressure. When I, like I assume most people do, expressed annoyance with going to the ER, she explained clearly the reasons for the recommendation and why she didn't believe there was a reasonable alternative. Even if I would have eventually gone to the ER, or waited until the next day while considering other options, Diane's explanation made sure I went to the ER that night and ensured I got the care I needed. She also accurately predicted the wait time at 7.5 hours, and recommended I bring snacks. I finished a book in the waiting room.

External Professional Relationships

Pharmaceutical, device, and biotechnology companies frequently collaborate with basic scientists and physicians within an academic medical center to help advance science and improve patient care. These relationships are important in achieving scientific breakthroughs and in establishing the effectiveness and safety of promising new therapies. In order to assure objectivity in clinical research and patient care, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (Feinberg), Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Children's Hospital of Chicago Medical Center, and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab have adopted integrity policies that require research and clinical faculty (in full-time, part-time, and unpaid/voluntary categories) to report compensated and uncompensated external industry relationships. Patients are encouraged to discuss these disclosures with their physician as well as to inquire as to how these relationships are overseen by Feinberg.
