Shared Leadership Model at Woodstock Hospital

The Nursing Shared Leadership Model supports participative decision-making by nurses at all levels within the hospital. The organized structure promotes nurse autonomy over clinical practice standards, quality improvement, staff and professional development, and research. Communication is multidirectional among bedside professional nurses, leadership, interprofessional teams, and the Chief Nurse Executive.

Nursing Leadership Council

The purpose of the Nursing Leadership Council is to provide guidance to all nursing leadership, shared leadership committees, and collaboratives to ensure goal accomplishment is consistent and aligned with the overarching NM Strategic Plan and Woodstock Nursing Strategic Roadmap.

The Woodstock Nursing Strategic Roadmap provides all key stakeholders with a blueprint to advance understanding of the connection between the work of the Nursing Shared Leadership Committees and the local and national agenda healthcare. The Nurse Leadership Council facilitates and champions the coordination and cooperation between shared leadership committees at all levels of the organization.

This council is led by the Chief Nurse Executive.

Shared Governance Coordinating Council

The purpose of the Coordinating Council is to direct the shared governance structure and processes in alignment with the Nursing Strategic Roadmap. The council reviews the purpose and work for the organization-wide councils towards meeting their annual goals. This council serves as a resource and advocate for unit based outcomes councils, and facilitates information exchange to all levels.

This is a joint council between Woodstock and McHenry Hospitals.

Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council

The purpose of the Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council is to advance research and evidence-based practice projects across the Northwest Region of Northwestern Medicine. Advancement of research is accomplished through education, mentoring, and the development of effective processes and support structures.

This committee approves all nursing principal investigator candidates and makes recommendations to the Chief Nurse Executives for additional research. Committee members review and approve all research proposals conducted by nurses or involve nurses as research subjects.

This is a joint council between Woodstock, McHenry and Huntley Hospitals. Meetings are facilitated by the nurse researcher.

Nurse Profession Recognition and Advocacy Council

The purpose of the Nurse Profession Recognition and Advocacy Council is to ensure recognition of nurses and their peers. This council focuses on recognition nurse with the DAISY recognition, in addition to planning recognitions for Certified Nurses Day and Nurses Week. Members of this council promote ongoing lifelong learning through a variety of diverse venues for all nurses, such as attainment of professional certification, academic advancement, mentorships, and memberships in professional organizations. Finally, this council promotes engagement in volunteering for non-profit organizations, as well as awareness of legislature related to the nursing profession.

Nursing Quality & Safety Council

The purpose of the Nursing Quality and Safety Council is to oversee nursing practice to ensure the delivery of safe, high quality, and evidence-based care. The work of this committee supports and is in full alignment with the Professional Practice Model.

Committee members monitor quality and nurse-sensitive metrics; recommend evidence-based best practice changes to meet goals; support nursing collaboratives developed to advance specific strategic goals.

Nursing Peer Review Council

The purpose of the Nursing Peer Review Council is to empower clinical nurses who exhibit best practices to identify and address gaps in quality care; identify opportunities for advancing the quality of nursing care and documentation in Woodstock and McHenry Hospitals; and provide professional development for all parties involved in the review process.

This is a joint council between Woodstock and McHenry Hospitals.

Nursing Care Council

The purpose of the Nursing Care Council is the bi-annual review and contribution to the organization’s staffing plan to ensure ongoing compliance with, “Staffing by Patient Acuity” complying with the state of Illinois Legislation.

Nursing Excellence Council

The purpose of the Nursing Excellence Council is to engage clinical nurses and nursing leadership in the enculturation of nursing excellence behaviors and practices throughout the hospital.

Unit-Based Outcomes Councils

The purpose of unit-based outcomes councils is to monitor unit performance, develop and implement plans to achieve annual goals, identify strategies to provide efficiencies around unit-based supplies (appropriateness and availability); and advance interdisciplinary teamwork activities on the unit to advance employee engagement.

The process improvement model used for the Unit-Based Councils is the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control) framework. This evidence-based model is in alignment with the NM improvement system and provides structure to unit-based process improvement activities.
