Pediatric Inpatient Services at Central DuPage Hospital and Delnor Hospital

Pediatric inpatients benefit from 24/7 on-site care provided by Lurie Children’s hospitalists at Central DuPage Hospital. All day, every day, they monitor care and provide clear communication and continuity with referring physicians. Inpatient services at Central DuPage Hospital also include the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Inpatient services at Delnor Hospital include the Special Care Nursery.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

In the Central DuPage Hospital Level III NICU, neonatologists from Lurie Children’s are on-site at all times, using state-of-the-art technology and therapies to help ensure the best possible care. The NICU has private rooms, which enable parents and babies to be together in a quiet environment that promotes healing and growth.

Special Care Nursery

The Special Care Nursery at Delnor Hospital is designated a Level II with Exceptions nursery by the State of Illinois. This seven-bed nursery is staffed 24/7 by Lurie Children’s neonatal nurse practitioners with backup and patient rounds handled by Lurie Children’s neonatologists. The nursery is proud to provide advanced Level II care emphasizing family-friendly approaches.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The PICU at Central DuPage Hospital is equipped with state-of-the art technology. Each patient room is private with in-room sleeping accommodations for parents. Across the street, the Ronald McDonald House near Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital offers a home away from home for families of hospitalized patients during their time of need.

Critical Care Specialists

Lurie Children’s Hospital pediatric critical care specialists, in collaboration with pediatric hospitalists, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Central DuPage Hospital to:

  • Coordinate transports from other regional community hospitals to the PICU
  • Provide comprehensive intensive care to hospitalized patients
  • Communicate with patients and their families
  • Communicate with the patient’s primary care physician and other specialists
  • Coordinate all services, including admitting, diagnostic testing/results and discharge
  • Perform evaluation and provide care before and after special procedures and surgery

Child Life Program

The child life specialists at Central DuPage Hospital, Delnor Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Proton Center* are an integral part of the healthcare team, trained to support the psychosocial needs of children and their families through play, guidance, education and self-expressive activities.

These experts are committed to practicing family-centered care to relieve a child’s fear and anxiety through therapeutic play and distraction techniques while also addressing the needs of siblings affected by a child’s illness or hospitalization. Each child life specialist has a bachelor’s or master’s degree with an emphasis on human growth and development, education, psychology or a related field.
