Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation
Acute inpatient rehabilitation at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital pairs intensive therapy with high-quality care to help you regain as much independence and function as possible.
Research shows that the sooner you begin a comprehensive rehabilitation program, the more significant your improvements may be. This can help prevent a new challenge from turning into a long-term disability, and it can increase your independence.
At Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, a physiatrist — a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation — will guide you and your care team, as well as your family members and caregivers to optimize your recovery.
Criteria for Admission
Inpatient rehabilitation can be a key step in helping your recovery from surgery, serious illness and injury. We combine intensive therapy with compassionate care from expert physicians and nurses to help you regain independence and meet your specific needs and goals. You may be eligible for this level of care if you have experienced changes in physical function, mobility, speech, cognition, behavior, emotions and personal independence as a result of:
- Physical disabilities
- Illnesses
- Injuries, such as those to your brain or spinal cord
Inpatient acute rehabilitation is not for everyone, and all rehabilitation hospitals must follow admission criteria outlined by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). These rules are designed to determine if patients can demonstrate the medical necessity required for intensive inpatient rehabilitation.
