Inpatient acute rehabilitation is not for everyone, and all rehabilitation hospitals must follow admission criteria outlined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These rules are designed to ensure that only patients who demonstrate the medical needs required for intensive inpatient rehabilitation are admitted to this level of care.

To qualify for this level of care, you must:

  • Be willing and able to participate in, and benefit from, three hours of intensive rehabilitation five days a week. On average, you will receive a minimum of three hours of therapy a day on at least five days per week.
  • Require two or more modalities of therapy (e.g., physical, speech, occupational).
  • Require 24-hour medical/nursing care with daily oversight of a physiatrist.
  • Have the capacity to make functional improvements based on the rehabilitation goals set with the therapy team.
  • Have approval of a physiatrist documenting their medical necessity and compliance with the other admission criteria.

Patient admissions are arranged by the discharge facility, hospital or a Marianjoy clinic. A family member or individual with power of attorney is encouraged to be present to help with the admission process and complete registration paperwork on your behalf, if you cannot do so.

Before you arrive, you can use the Marianjoy Admissions Checklist to identify what you need to bring with you to ensure your admissions process goes smoothly.

Referrals

If you are currently at an acute care or skilled nursing facility, please ask your physician or case manager for a referral to Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital. If medical rehabilitation has been prescribed for you or a loved one, you can take a virtual tour of Marianjoy.

If you do not have a referral, you can complete a form to request care at Marianjoy. This will authorize a Marianjoy referral liaison and/or physician to follow up with you to determine the most appropriate level of care.
