Volunteer Requirements and Application

Mandatory Qualifications

You must be at least 16 years of age (18 years of age at Northwestern Memorial Hospital) to volunteer for Northwestern Medicine. In addition, volunteers must:

  • Pass a criminal background check if you are age 18 or older
  • Agree to a six-month commitment of at least three to four hours per week* (varies by role/location)
  • Attend virtual hospital orientation for new volunteers
  • Provide immunization records or undergo immunization screenings for:
    • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
    • Chickenpox (varicella)
    • Tetanus (Tdap)
    • Others as needed
  • Undergo a TB test
  • Receive a flu shot if volunteering during flu season
  • Read and comply with Northwestern Medicine policies, such as code of conduct, privacy laws and dress code
  • Obtain hospital identification badge and uniform (at no cost to the volunteer)
  • Complete on-the-job training for assigned volunteer service

All NM sites are currently accepting volunteer applications, (except for our Chicago Location, Northwestern Memorial Hospital). Northwestern Memorial Hospital will resume accepting volunteer applications beginning on January 2, 2025.

Teens and college students interested in summer-only service in 2025 must submit an application between December 15, 2024 – March 1, 2025, and attend an orientation before the end of May 2025. Applications received outside of the stated application period will not be considered.
