Symptoms of Skin Complications from Chemotherapy

Symptoms of cancer treatment complications will vary, depending on the type of cancer, type of treatment and any previous skin disorders. Some people may have no complications at all, while others list skin complications among the most bothersome.

Possible skin symptoms include:

  • Sensitivity to sunlight (easily sunburned)
  • Redness and inflammation
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Peeling
  • Excessively dry skin
  • Cracking and swelling, especially on the palms and soles of the feet
  • Acne
  • Darkening of the skin along the vein used to administer chemotherapy

Possible nail symptoms include:

  • Dark color
  • Yellowing
  • Brittleness
  • Cracks
  • Vertical ridges

Possible hair symptoms include:

  • Loss of hair on the scalp
  • Loss of eyelashes and eyebrows

Inform your care team immediately if you experience:

  • Burning
  • Pain
  • Severe itching that comes on suddenly
  • Hives or other rashes
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
