Symptoms of Pleurisy and Pleural Effusion

Pleurisy and pleural effusion have similar symptoms, which include sharp chest pain that worsens with coughing or deep breathing. Other symptoms may include:

• Cough
• Shortness of breath
• Rapid breathing
• Hiccups
• Pneumothorax ​(collapsed lung) 
• Fever and chills, in the case of empyema, an infection of the fluid in the pleura
