What Is Pleurodesis?

Pleurodesis is a procedure to eliminate the pleural space between pleural layers, causing them to adhere to one another. Ordinarily, the two pleural layers have a small amount of lubricating fluid between them. In certain conditions, additional air or fluid may build up between the two layers. Using a chest tube, your physician can inject medication that will minimize the fluid or air that can collect there.

This procedure is performed to help prevent the recurrence of pneumothorax or pleural effusion (fluid buildup between the pleural layers).
