Overview

No appointment? No problem. Northwestern Medicine Immediate Care at River North provides care when you need it, without a trip to the emergency department. River North is staffed by licensed physicians who are trained to evaluate and treat a variety of medical conditions in both adult and pediatric patients. We treat minor illnesses, minor accidents and skin conditions. We also offer vaccinations, X-rays, lab orders and tests.

Please note: If your child under the age of six months is experiencing a high fever, we recommend you contact your child’s primary care physician.

What happens during a virtual visit?

Virtual Visits Available

A virtual visit allows you to talk with an Immediate Care physician or advanced practice provider over the phone or video chat rather than having an in-person visit. A virtual visit might be right for you if you need care for any of the following:

  • Cough and cold symptoms
  • Allergies
  • Sore throat
  • Minor injuries and accidents
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Pink eye
  • Flu symptoms
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Sinus pain
  • Lower back pain

Virtual visits are offered for patients 16 and older. Please preregister for an in-office visit if your child is younger than 16.

What happens during an in-office visit?

Reservations and Online Check-In for an In-Office Visit

To allow for physical distancing, preregistration for an Immediate Care Center visit is strongly encouraged.

Reserve your time for an Immediate Care Center visit below. Once you have reserved your visit time, you will receive a call from the Immediate Care Center Registration team to update your personal and insurance information.

When You Arrive at the Immediate Care Center

Please remain in your vehicle (or remain outside the building if you walked or used other transportation). Contact the Registration team by following the instructions provided in the preregistration text message.

  • You will be notified by text message or phone call when it is time for you to enter the Immediate Care Center for your visit.
  • Please remember to practice physical distancing and remain 6 feet from others.
  • As you enter, you will be provided with a face mask. You will be required to wear this NM-provided mask while in the Immediate Care Center.

I understand that Online Check-in is not to be used for life threatening conditions. I do not believe that the patient's condition is life threatening. In case of life threatening conditions, I understand that I must call 911 immediately or proceed directly to the nearest emergency room for immediate medical attention. What does this mean?

Parking

Limited street parking is available Monday–Friday. Public transportation is best.

If you are still uncertain about where to seek care for illnesses or injuries, understanding the difference between the emergency department and immediate care centers will guide you in the right direction.

Below are some of the more common conditions we'll treat at the clinic:

  • Urinary tract infection

Minor accidents:

  • Animal bites
  • Bee/insect/spider bites
  • Cuts/lacerations
  • Foreign body in eye, ear or nose
  • Burns, including sunburn
  • Sprains/strains
  • Sutures

Skin problems: 

  • Athlete's foot
  • Irritations
  • Poison ivy/oak
  • Rash
  • Sunburn
  • Warts

Vaccinations:

Vaccinations are offered only as part of an office visit and required before being administered:

  • Non-preventive Tdap (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
  • Flu (seasonal)

Lab orders, tests and X-rays:

Lab orders, tests and X-rays are provided as part of an office visit and evaluation by the physician.

The following tests are performed in our on-site laboratory:

  • Blood sugar (diabetes)
  • Pregnancy
  • Spirometry (lung function)
  • Urine dip stick

Any other tests that the physician orders will be sent to the laboratory at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Your results will be shared with you and your primary care physician as soon as they are available. Some laboratory tests take longer than others, and it may be several days before results are available.
