Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital History
Woodstock
In the early days of the 20th century, Woodstock was home to several small practice hospitals. In 1914, a group of physicians obtained a charter for a hospital in the home and office of Dr. Hyde West. The success of this hospital was such that a second hospital was built on South Street in the city. This hospital was named Woodstock Memorial Hospital.
McHenry
In 1956, Lee Gladstone, MD, built a clinic on Green Street in the city of McHenry. The first and second floor included an emergency room, operating room, reception areas and offices for outpatient physician care. The ground floor provided 22 beds for newborn, pediatric and adult patients. A McHenry Hospital addition was soon built near the clinic on Waukegan Avenue. With the rapid growth of population, a new McHenry Hospital was built in 1984 on Route 31 and Bull Valley Road, and was named Northern Illinois Medical Center.
Centegra Health System Is Formed
In 1995, a new Woodstock Hospital was built on Route 14 and Doty Road. At that time, Centegra Health System was founded, comprised of the two hospitals in McHenry County — in Woodstock and McHenry — to provide patients access to high-quality care and advanced technology.
Huntley Expansion
In response to population growth, Centegra Health System purchased land at the intersection of Algonquin and Haligus roads in Huntley, Illinois, in 2006. In 2008, a medical office building opened to provide Centegra Immediate Care and Centegra Physician Care services to the community.
The populations of southern McHenry County and northern Kane County continued to grow, and in 2010, Centegra Health System filed an application for a certificate of need with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to build a new hospital in Huntley. The health system broke ground in 2014, and the hospital welcomed its first patients on August 9, 2016.
The 128-bed facility provides access to a Level II Trauma Center; surgical services, including a cardiac catheterization laboratory; a 20-bed family birth center; medical-surgical services; an eight-bed intensive care unit; and a hip and knee joint replacement center.
Integration With Northwestern Medicine
Centegra Health System joined Northwestern Medicine on September 1, 2018. Its three hospitals were renamed Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital. Its physician group, Centegra Physician Care, became part of Northwestern Medicine Regional Medical Group on May 1, 2019.
