Osteomyelitis Treatments

Treatment for osteomyelitis will depend on the location and extent of the inflammation and on the microbe causing the infection.

In most cases, medication in the form of antibiotics or antifungals will be used to treat the infection. The medication may be taken orally or it may require hospitalization to have it delivered via IV. You may also receive medication to control pain and inflammation.

Occasionally, the bone must be splinted or a cast must be applied to keep the bone stable and prevent further trauma.

If osteomyelitis is severe or chronic, surgery to remove the infected bone tissue may be required. In rare cases, amputation may be the only way to fully remove the osteomyelitis.
