Why Northwestern Medicine?

As leaders in research and treatment for liver care, Northwestern Medicine Hepatology is relentless in the pursuit of multidisciplinary care, leading-edge research and breakthrough treatments for patients.

Northwestern Medicine has the largest hepatology team in Illinois and one of the largest in the country. Our hepatology team provides care to patients at 17 satellite locations throughout the Chicagoland suburbs, North and Central Illinois, and Northwest Indiana, allowing patients to access care closer to where they live and work. The team sees each patient individually, performs a comprehensive assessment to determine risk factors and then develops the best treatment plan. We work closely with patients and their families to answer questions and provide guidance about treatments and procedures. In addition, we help patients and families manage post-hospitalization care by working with primary care physicians to improve the patient’s quality of life.

If more advanced treatment is needed, the liver disease and transplant program within the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers a complete range of medical and surgical interventions to treat patients with complex liver disorders, including liver disease management, end-stage disease treatment and liver transplantation.

Additionally, our liver disease program has been recognized for its success with immunosuppressant agents in reducing post-transplant complications. We are one of the few hospitals in the Midwest that perform minimally invasive laparoscopic resections of liver tumors as well as laparoscopic procedures in patients with cirrhosis.
