Eye Infection Treatments

Most eye infections respond well to treatments such as:

  • Warm compresses
  • Prescription eye drops, including antibiotic eye drops for bacterial infections
  • Eye ointments

It’s also important to treat the underlying source of the infection if it is present elsewhere on your body. This is particularly true of sexually transmitted diseases.

Preventing eye infections

To avoid getting an eye infection, especially if someone you spend time with has an infection, remember to:

  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly
  • Practice good contact lens hygiene
  • Avoid touching your eyes
  • Avoid sharing towels, bedding and makeup
  • Avoid sharing contact lenses, cases and solutions
  • Replace old makeup and avoid makeup when you have symptoms of infection
  • Protect your eyes from sun, harsh weather and chemical exposure
