5.0 star star star star starI hope that this gets out to all the people that change lives at the DeKalb Cancer Center If there was an 11 ...I would hit it! Dr. Bayer and his team saved my life! That deserves an 11...no seriously. I was diagnosed as a Stage 4 Mantel Cell Lymphoma patient. The first doctor I saw didn't have the best bedside manor and didn't make me feel like this fight was going to be successful. The one thing he did do for me was to direct me to Dr. Bayer at the DeKalb Cancer Center. From the first moment I was directed to Dr. Bayer and his team I began to feel that I have a chance. After a long introductory conversation I had with doctors on the team and supporting staff, I knew I was ready to fight! I was going to be in a study and that helped me to feel that many people were going to be part of my journey, but Dr. Bayer was my point person and the doctor that was going to lead me on this path to recovery. We have been together for over 4 years now and we have shared more than just results, we have shared life. I could tell that he was going to be aggressive with my treatments and when there were moments that things didn't look right, he had me getting tests and biopsies to make sure that the course we were on was the correct one. He worked to get me the best care, answered questions, sent me to other doctors on the team for answers but above all gave me a reason to continue treatments. He didn't overstate anything but the things he does, he does with a confidence that gives patients a reassurance that the choices that are being made are good ones. It doesn't hurt to know that the staff at the Cancer Center loves him. I can't tell you how many times someone would say to me, " Oh you have Dr. Bayer" and a smile would come across their face. It gave me an understanding into how much he is respected throughout the Cancer Center. When I say thank you to him for everything he has done for me, he always says that it is a "Team Effort." As a high school coach, I appreciated the fact that he recognizes that everyone involved in my recovery has played an important roll. So I am saying THANK YOU to all of you who have had a part in my treatments and recovery. I know there were days that Dr. Bayer had to deliver difficult news to other patients. I could see it in his face. I can't imagine what that must feel like. So I was glad that usually when it came to my time, the news was usually good, at least the news meant that our path could continue in a positive direction. I'm sure that helped to reinforce why he worked so hard to become a doctor and that he continues to work hard at changing the landscape of cancer for the better. So, would I recommend Dr. Bayer... HELL YES! Would I recommend my team... HELL YES! If you change just one life, is it worth it???.. Well count me as that LIFE you changed.

5.0 star star star star starDr Bayer was very informative and took ample time to explain what was going on, and in doing so was able to rest some of my fears. He reviewed my history and actually listened to my concerns and worries.

External Professional Relationships
Pharmaceutical, device, and biotechnology companies frequently collaborate with basic scientists and physicians within an academic medical center to help advance science and improve patient care. These relationships are important in achieving scientific breakthroughs and in establishing the effectiveness and safety of promising new therapies. In order to assure objectivity in clinical research and patient care, the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (Feinberg), Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Children's Hospital of Chicago Medical Center, and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab have adopted integrity policies that require research and clinical faculty (in full-time, part-time, and unpaid/voluntary categories) to report compensated and uncompensated external industry relationships. Patients are encouraged to discuss these disclosures with their physician as well as to inquire as to how these relationships are overseen by Feinberg.
