Nursing Student Experiences
Nursing Student Experiences at Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Northwestern Medicine provides numerous opportunities for nursing students to be part of a knowledgeable and caring team of healthcare professionals who are committed to providing exceptional patient care. We currently have affiliations with 12 schools of nursing for clinical rotations and clinical role transition experiences. We also offer a student nurse externship, which is a competitive summer experience open to any nursing student.
Student Nurse Internship Program
The Northwestern Memorial Hospital student nurse internship (SNI) program is an intensive, eight-week summer program during which student nurses partner with a nurse preceptor to develop critical thinking skills, hone technical skills and learn how to prioritize care. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in classroom learning sessions and Grand Rounds within specialized clinical areas.
Candidates must be able to commit to an eight-week summer program and to continued employment at Northwestern Memorial Hospital until they graduate. At the end of the eight-week program, nurse interns will receive a formal evaluation, and if they qualify, an employment offer to continue working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital until they transition into a staff nurse role. Student nurse interns will receive a competitive salary and will have the option of flexible hours to accommodate their academic schedules.
Schedules
Student nurse interns will work the day shift in either eight- or 12-hour shifts. They typically work every other weekend, and they do not work holidays. No overtime will be scheduled for or expected of nurse interns.
