Application FAQs

We have six PGY2 advanced positions available starting July 1, 2027.

Our program participates in the National Residency Matching Program® (NRMP) and follows its rules. Residents are matched at the PGY2 level through the NRMP process.

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Our program does not sponsor J-1 visas.

Application Review

We take a holistic approach when reviewing applications, considering not only academic achievements but also each candidate's extracurricular activities. This includes your research experience, community engagement, volunteerism, leadership roles and life experiences before medical school. 

Submit your ERAS application when the ERAS season opens in September 2025.You must submit your application by October 1.

You must apply via ERAS and include:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Medical student performance evaluation
  • Three to four letters of recommendation:
    • One letter must be from a physiatrist.
    • One letter must be a specialty-specific standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE).
  • Personal statement that includes one paragraph explaining why the PM&R Residency Program at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital interests you
  • Medical school transcripts
  • USMLE or COMLEX-USA transcripts as applicable
    • We do not require USMLE exams for DO applicants.
  • Away rotations:
    • You are not required to complete away rotations within the specialty to apply.
  • ECFMG certification status report if you are an international medical graduate

Applicants are responsible for securing PGY1 positions as required by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our program does not offer PGY1 positions.

We will release interview offers on October 31. If you receive an interview offer, please schedule or decline it within 48 hours.

Virtual interviews will be held:

  • November 10, 12, 14 and 17
  • December 8, 10, 12 and 15

In-person second looks will not be offered.

Final status on applications will be released no later than November 1.
