Application FAQs

We have six PGY2 advanced positions available starting July 1, 2028.

Our program participates in the National Residency Matching Program® (NRMP) and follows its policies and Codes of Conduct. Residents are matched at the PGY2 level through the NRMP process.

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Our program does not sponsor J-1 visas.

Application Review

We take a holistic approach to application review. While academic performance is an important consideration, we also value research experience, community engagement and service, leadership roles, extracurricular involvement, and the unique life experiences and perspectives each applicant brings to the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

  • Medical students

You can start submitting ERAS applications in September 2026. Please submit your application before October 1, 2026.

You must apply via ERAS and include the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Three to four letters of recommendation
    • One letter must be from a physiatrist.
    • One letter must be a specialty-specific Standardized Letter of Evaluation.
  • Personal statement that includes one paragraph explaining why the PM&R Residency Program at Northwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital interests you.
  • Medical school transcripts.
  • USMLE or COMLEX-USA transcripts as applicable
    • We do not require USMLE exams for DO applicants
  • Away rotations
    • You are not required to complete away rotations within the specialty to apply.
  • ECFMG certification status report if you are an international medical graduate.

Applicants are responsible for securing PGY1 positions as required by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our program does not offer PGY1 positions.

We will release interview invitations on October 23, 2026. Please schedule or decline your virtual interview offer within 48 hours. Interview spots are available for all invited candidates.

Virtual interviews will be held from 9 am to noon or 1 to 4 pm CT on the following dates:

  • November 2, 4, 6 and 9, 2026
  • Marianjoy uses the Thalamus Platform for virtual interviews
  • December 7, 9, 11 and 14, 2026

In-person second looks will not be offered. Final status on applications will be released no later than October 26, 2026.

We do not use the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™ platform. Allopathic and osteopathic medical students may email Yana Panos, PM&R program manager for more information.
