Histotechnology is a science that detects tissue abnormalities at the microscopic level. Histotechnicians and histotechnologists are key allied health professionals that use skilled and sophisticated lab techniques while working with pathologists on everything from diagnosing malignant and benign cancer to determining treatment options from various test results.

Daily tasks of a histotechnologist include:

  • Receiving and accession tissue specimen
  • Grossing tissue specimen
  • Processing
  • Embedding tissue into paraffin blocks
  • Cutting and preparing microscopic slides
  • Staining tissue sections using various techniques, such as special stains, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence
