Hospital Inpatient Experience
We want to make sure patients and their families have the best possible experience. To learn how we can do better, we send a survey to adult patients to learn about their experiences during their hospital stay.

What Is This Measure?
The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey is a standardized questionnaire. We send it to patients after they leave the hospital to learn about their experiences. To help patients compare hospitals more easily, the survey uses a rating system that ranges from 1 to 5 stars.- The best possible rating is 5 stars. A 5-star rating reflects the highest level of care and that patients had a more positive experience.
- A hospital’s star rating combines 10 categories into 1 score based on survey results from a randomly selected group of recently discharged patients.

What Is Northwestern Medicine Doing to Improve This Measure?
Our goal is to provide safe, high-quality care to all patients in a clean, quiet and healing environment. Our teams work together to improve the care we provide, including:
- Ensuring staff communicates clearly and respectfully
- Responding quickly to patient needs
- Providing enough detail about medication and pain management
- Answering questions to help patients understand their health and care
In addition, we want to make sure all patients leave with clear discharge instructions and know what to expect next for their follow-up care.
