CATCH My Breath (E-cigarette Prevention Program)

CATCH My Breath is based on a social influences model of prevention that focuses on the social and psychological factors that have been shown to promote the onset of tobacco use. Accordingly, the objectives of CATCH My Breath are built on students’ skills and behaviors in addition to increasing their knowledge, beliefs, and motivations to abstain from E-cigarette use.

Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital offers CATCH My Breath to grades 6-8, delivered in three 40 minute sessions. The sessions use same age peer leaders to facilitate classroom activities. Educational strategies include cooperative group learning, group discussions, reports and goal setting to actively engage students. The intended outcomes of the program are to ensure students abstain from any E-cigarette use, discontinue using E-cigarettes if they have experimented with it, and influence friends and peers not to use E-cigarettes.
