Associate Manager of Patient Care Heads to the Bedside
When Rachel Hensley, MSN, RN, OCN, CNL, associate manager of patient care in the Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital Medical Care Center, arrived at Northwestern Medicine almost three years ago, she was tasked with managing three units of the center. But when two of her floors became COVID-19 units, Hensley put on her hospital-issued scrubs and stepped up to the bedside to support her staff.
“I’ve always loved bedside nursing, and I wanted to hop in whenever staff needed me,” she says. “I didn’t think it was fair to send nurses into these rooms if I wasn’t going in, too. It turns out, there’s no place I’d rather be.”
Hensley is quick to recognize her team members, who continue to inspire her with their initiative, collaboration and dedication to putting patients first.
“Our team has been absolutely amazing taking ownership of caring for these patients, learning the science behind what we’re doing to care for them, connecting patients and their families with video chats, and taking care of each other,” she says.
