Message from Edward Schaeffer, MD, PhD, Chair of Urology

We are thrilled to welcome our colleagues from around the world to Chicago for the 2019 AUA Annual meeting. The Northwestern Medicine Urology Program has a strong presence at this year’s meeting, with plenary and panel presentations from our expert faculty and abstract presentations from our trainees. At Northwestern, we are continuously working to drive transformative insights in clinical, laboratory and translational urologic research, and look forward to showcasing our most innovative work at this year’s meeting.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Welcome to Chicago!

Awards

Congratulations to the faculty and residents who will be receiving prestigious awards at this year's meeting:

William Catalona, MD
William J. Catalona, MD, Professor of Urology, will be honored with the Richard D. Williams, MD Prostate Cancer Research Excellence Award. This award, established in 2013, is presented annually to recognize outstanding and impactful work in prostate cancer research over the past 10 years. Dr. Catalona was nominated for this honor by the Society of Urologic Oncology and was selected by a review committee.

Emilie Johnson, MD, MPH
Emilie Johnson, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Urology, will receive the Societies for Pediatric Urology Sushil Lacy, MD Award for her two-year study on disparities in access to neonatal circumcision. This mechanism is part of the Urology Care Foundation’s movement to encourage bright, young physician-scientists and researchers to dedicate their careers to improving patients' lives through better understanding of the development and management of urologic diseases and conditions.

Adam Weiner, MD
Adam Weiner, MD, a third year resident in the Northwestern Department of Urology, will receive a Urology Care Foundation Residency Research Award. These awards provide motivated and exceptional urology residents with mentored training to prepare them for careers in urologic research. Dr. Weiner will work under the direction of Edward Schaeffer, MD, PhD, to characterize the molecular subtypes of primary prostate cancer in a large cohort of African American men and correlate those subtypes with oncologic outcomes.
